Dental veneers are a form of procedures in which a thin custom made shell or layer of tooth colored materials is placed over the facial surfaces of your teeth, either to improve the aesthetics of a tooth, or to protect a damaged tooth surface, Providing a natural, attractive look. These shells are bonded to the front of the teeth changing their color, shape, size, or length.
The two most common materials used in dental veneers are:
Resin veneers are thinner and require removal of less of the tooth surface before placement. Porcelain is brittle however, when it is firmly bonded to the tooth it can become very strong and durable. Porcelain veneers resist stains better than resin veneers and better mimic the light reflecting properties of natural teeth.A composite veneer may be directly placed or indirectly fabricated and later bonded to the tooth, typically using resin cement. In contrast, a porcelain veneer may only be indirectly fabricated.
The advantage of veneers versus crowns is that much less tooth material is removed, and the procedure is generally less uncomfortable. Veneers are recommended for teeth that have large fillings or little tooth structure. Other benefits of veneers include durability, an improved smile appearance, and the need for little to no removal of tooth structure compared to crowns.
